A talented group of students from Cyfnod 3 attended the Urdd Eisteddfod in Anglesey and competed in the ensemble and solo competitions during the May half term. The students performed in Welsh, using a variety of instruments and were featured live on S4C.
Da iawn, pawb!
Bethan Antur, who worked closely with the pupils throughout the project, shared how deeply the performances affected audiences across the Eisteddfod week.
"Throughout the Eisteddfod week I was approached by literally dozens of people – from parents, adjudicators and Urdd staff – who had seen the Ysgol y Gogarth pupils' performances and told me they were moved to tears."
One particularly moving moment was Lexi's performance of Nwy yn y Nen, which left a lasting impression on many audience members.
Bethan explained:
"Arfon Wyn came up to me on the Eisteddfod field. Arfon Wyn, who has worked with ALN pupils throughout his life in Pendalar and Hafod Lon, was exceptionally grateful that Ysgol y Gogarth had participated in the Eisteddfod. He referred specifically to Lexi's performance of Nwy yn y Nen, which moved him to tears."
The success of the project was only possible thanks to Miss Seren Byrne and Mr Alex Williams and the dedication of staff who supported the pupils every step of the way.
Although funding from Welsh National Opera has now come to an end, we believe the impact of the project demonstrates the value of providing creative opportunities for young people. Looking ahead, there is excitement about future opportunities for pupils to participate in the Urdd Eisteddfod and other creative projects.
"The possibilities are endless," said Bethan, highlighting ideas that could combine singing, dancing, storytelling and Welsh-language performance work in future years.
Everyone at Ysgol y Gogarth is incredibly proud of the pupils who represented the school so brilliantly and showcased their talents on a national stage.
