Students from Ysgol Y Gogarth have brought their creativity and local pride to life through a unique mosaic art project. Working with local artist Mel Roberts of Mazin Mosaics, teachers, and support staff, the students designed and crafted colourful mosaic panels inspired by their experiences travelling the Conwy Valley Line. This project not only celebrates the railway’s history but also highlights the landmarks and stories that make North Wales special.
Over 12 weeks, the students participated in weekly art sessions funded by Transport for Wales. These sessions focused on design, colour, texture, and storytelling. The students learned new mosaic-making skills while building confidence and teamwork. The project gave them a chance to connect with their local area, exploring the history of the Conwy Valley Line and the places it passes through.

Mel Roberts shared her experience: “From the outset, the pupils have been engaged, eager to learn and have grown in confidence in both working together and in their mosaic making skills. They should be proud, as I am, of the beautiful mosaics.” This hands-on approach helped students develop artistic skills and a deeper appreciation for their community.
The finished mosaics will be permanently displayed at Llandudno railway station. This public art piece will welcome passengers, visitors, and locals, offering a colourful and meaningful tribute to the Conwy Valley Line. The project creates a lasting legacy that celebrates the region’s heritage and the students’ creativity.

Janine Tennant-Jones, emphasized the project’s impact on learners: “It has provided authentic opportunities for young people to develop their creativity, confidence and collaboration skills while engaging with their local area and cynefin in a purposeful and inclusive way.” The project aligns with the Curriculum for Wales by encouraging learners to take an active role in their community through meaningful work.
The collaboration between Ysgol Y Gogarth, Mel Roberts, and Transport for Wales shows how art can connect people and places. It offers a model for how schools and communities can work together to celebrate local heritage and inspire young people.
